Freeing Your Child from Anxiety Powerful Practical Solutions

If you are the parent of one of the millions of children with worry and anxiety: help is on the way. Anxiety is the number one mental health challenge facing our children today. Fortunately, there is good news for these kids and the parents who suffer along with them – anxiety disorders are also the most treatable mental health condition. With the powerful cognitive-behavioral treatments now available, there has never been more hope for anxious children\’s bright future.
Treatment is not about trying to cajole or talk kids out of their fears; it\’s about teaching them to see worry as a problem to be solved. Translating cutting-edge techniques into down-to-earth, empathic, user-friendly steps, Freeing Your Child from Anxiety equips parents, teachers and therapists with the information they need to recognize the red flags of anxiety in children and how they can systematically overcome the obstacles that anxiety imposes.
Empowering and insightful, Freeing Your Child from Anxiety, gives children – from preschool to high school – the action plan and the tools to take charge, unplug from anxiety, and plug into sound, realistic thinking. Learning the lessons from parents, children can reduce anxiety and even prevent anxiety disorders from taking hold.
Part One includes a primer on causes and mechanisms of transmission of anxiety messages in the brain – the how, when and where of seeking help for your child – a chapter on the worry tricks the brain can play, and finally the five step \’Master Plan\’ for overcoming anxiety.
Part Two goes in depth, with separate chapters for each anxiety subtype: panic, separation anxiety, social anxiety, generalized worry, phobias, trauma, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Also included is a chapter on habit behaviors and conditions which are typically exacerbated by stress, tics and trichotillomania.
Part Three expands the focus to anxious children at school, and with friends and siblings. Because nighttime can be a very anxious time, a chapter on managing nighttime fears and sleep difficulties is included.
Anxious children are especially sensitive to real life stress such as coping with illness, death, crime, and terrorism. Strategies for how to constructively discuss these difficult topics are included in a separate chapter.more info

Helped Me Understand the Disorder
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This book was extremely useful for me — I don’t suffer from anxiety so I didn’t understand and was easily frustrated by many of my daughter’s actions that were directly related to her anxiety disorder. I didn’t understand the biological element and how the brain chemistry affects everything from how sensitive she was about her socks not feeling right to being unable to participate in an activity that she loved. I feel I understand some of what she must be going through and it has helped me be more supportive of her condition.

Great for parents
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This book is one of the best I’ve seen in terms of describing how anxiety works and providing tips to combat it. It is written clearly and plainly and even includes some illustrations that make it very easy to understand why kids with anxiety have difficulty with certain tasks. This book gave me hope for how I could help my two sons with anxiety. It made me feel empowered by giving me concrete advice that I could use at home and pass on to their teachers at school. This is required reading for anyone who has anxiety themselves or is trying to helping someone else who does.

This book was not only easy to read, but very informative. It gives lots of really good advice that can easily be implemented. I wish Dr. Chansky lived nearby so that we could use her as our therapist!!

Our son was suffering an extreme case of separation anxiety. It came on suddenly after attending kdg for a few months. We believe that my being ill for a week was the trigger. He became overly worried about my well-being and the well-being of other immediate family members. He wanted us all to be together all the time. I ordered this book in hopes of finding some techniques to talk him through this and to get him over it so that he could return to school without crying. Within a week of using the ideas and conversations in this book, my son was back to “normal”. Other anxieties are covered in this book as well and I would recommend it to anyone who would like to help their child overcome childhood anxiety. Wonderfully written and a wealth of information!

A miracle for me and my 8-yr-old
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
From the first page, this book gave me inspiration. I have two children with anxiety disorder and I learned right away that some of the ways I was trying to “help” were actually making them more anxious. After showing the books’ illustrations and ideas to my son, we are now working TOGETHER against the anxiety. The results are nothing short of a miracle! My daughter’s anxiety is under control with medication, but we will soon be trying to take her off, and we have the tools to help her.

Excellent advice for all who struggle with anxiety
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This book is a pleasure – full of excellent, concrete advice about how to help your child master his or her internal “worry brain”. But what surprised me is how much insight it gave me about how to handle my own worries and anxieties. Although written for parents, Dr. Chansky’s insights and advice would be helpful to anyone who struggles with fears or phobias. Excellent resource, beautifully written.

excellent resource
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This book is absolutely terrific. It is incredibly easy-to-read and provides wonderfully concrete suggestions. It is an excellent resource for any parent who is struggling with trying to help their child with anxiety. In addition, it gives great suggestions to all parents, whether their child is overtly anxious or not, in helping deal with normal, day-to-day anxieties (such as being afraid of the dark).

A must read
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a must read book for parents of children with anxiety disorders. So many books tell you what to do but this one tells you how to do it. Its chock-full of practical and useful examples on what to say. Dr. Chansky tells you how to talk to your child about anxiety in kid friendly and parent friendly language. She gives parents a way to understand what their child is experiencing so they can help. Dr Chansky also gives advice on how to handle lots of difficult day to day situations. Though written for parents, this book is a great help for therapists by providing a language to talk to kids and treatment guidelines for the different anxiety disorders useful for even the experienced clinician.

Grateful
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Best help yet for dealing with our son’s anxiety. It was like learning another language and I use the dialogue daily. Especially for a parent who does not have an anxiety issue, it really helped me to understand what a struggle it is to be in a state of constant worry and how to quit saying “there’s nothing to worry about”. For this book I will be eternally grateful as it is helping to change our son’s life back into what a nine year life should be; birhtday parties, sleepovers and play dates, not hanging out with mom worried about the next separartion.

This book has been a huge help and I have recommended it to several other parents of children like mine. It has made it easier to help my son who is a perfectionist to let go and know that not everything is under his control and it is okay. He is going to sleep much better and even when stressed, he knows the steps to make his mind shut off and go to sleep.

Excellent resource
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a great book for parents trying to help an anxious child. It is written in a straightforward way, without a lot of the fluff and extra verbiage that other, similar books include. The author includes realistic-seeming examples and vignettes, but not so many that they overwhelm the content. A very useful resource.

Freedom
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Any parent who has the unfortunate circumstance to pick-up this book and learn how to cope with their child’s anxiety will find it very informative and helpful. More importantly it will help your family down the road towards freedom. Freedom for your child to understand their feelings of anxiety and begin to relax and enjoy their childhood experiences. Freedom is also attainable for the parents, and other siblings, to have more productive days without dealing with the amazing stress of altering daily actives to meet the needs of your anxious child.
Dr. Chansky does a great job at explaining anxiety in simple terms that a parent can use to help explain to the child and re-assure him/her that the problem is not their fault. There are practical steps outlined that helps the child understand the differences between “good” thoughts and “anxious” thoughts. Dr. Chansky then breaks down different anxieties that are most common in children and provides exercises for the parents to break the anxieties down and build a foundation to change the child’s thinking patterns that lead to the anxiety.
While the book is laid out in a very easy to follow format, and devotes sections to your child’s particular problems, I think the book should be combined with some professional help depending on the severity of your child’s issues. It is a great tool to be used when working with your child to begin removing anxious thoughts, but as a non-professional I found certain exercise (although very helpful) opened the door to larger discussions that I was less prepared to help with.
A good book that will prepare parents and children towards successful freedom

Nice resource for parents
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have recommended this book to parents and they have found it helpful. They have not had a hard time understanding it or trying to implement some of the suggestions. The cost is reasonable for most parents. If you have attended trainings on anxiety and interventions to help, you probably have heard most of the techniques and suggestions. Is good aid to educate parents about anxiety, CBT, and worry and the brain.
